As we conclude off our 10th growing season, Small Axe Peppers celebrates the stories behind the peppers—stories that reveal the power of unity, resilience, and dedication in communities nationwide. From Chicago’s North Lawndale to the welcoming plots of Rush City, MN, to the sunflower-lined paths of Little Sugar Creek in Charlotte, NC, these community gardens don’t just grow food. They grow opportunities, hope, and an unwavering spirit that bridges neighbors and neighborhoods alike.
Today, we’re highlighting three exceptional gardens and sharing a peek into their unique journeys. Each one showcases how something as small as a pepper can spark transformation, pride, and change.
YMEN: Growing Resilience in North Lawndale, Chicago
YMEN (Young Men’s Educational Network) in Chicago’s North Lawndale is a true testament to resilience. More than an urban garden, YMEN’s 6,000 sq/ft space has grown into a hub of opportunity where young leaders build skills, tackle real challenges, and witness the fruits of their labor—literally and figuratively. This urban garden is home to 15 raised beds brimming with specialty peppers, each bed constructed by YMEN’s student leaders with the help of skilled carpenters and volunteers.
In North Lawndale, where barriers to opportunity are prevalent, YMEN offers a space for mentorship, skill-building, and pride. This project has impacted the community on many levels: providing income for teens, fresh produce for the neighborhood, and instilling a sense of pride and perseverance that stretches far beyond the garden fence. Every pepper harvested and every bed planted stands as an act of determination and unity.
Little Sugar Creek: Cultivating Acceptance in Charlotte, North Carolina
In Charlotte, North Carolina, Little Sugar Creek Community Garden stands as a beacon for mental health and autism awareness. This garden, filled with vibrant blooms and thriving vegetable beds, offers a welcoming space for all—especially for individuals with mental health challenges and autism. As Nadine, one of the garden’s leaders, puts it, “Little Sugar Creek cultivates more than just plants. We grow acceptance, understanding, and love.”
Sunflowers, the garden’s signature flower, symbolize their unwavering commitment to creating a supportive environment. Each one serves as a reminder that every individual, regardless of background, can find a home in the garden. Through each season, the Little Sugar Creek Community Garden brings together neighbors who work side by side, creating not only a beautiful space but also a strong sense of belonging and unity. Here, we’re reminded that growing food and growing community go hand in hand, and every pepper picked goes right back into supporting the garden’s mission.
Rush City Community Garden: Building Connections in Rush City, Minnesota
In Rush City, Minnesota, Bev has been a champion for community gardening. With her contagious enthusiasm, she captures the heart of Small Axe Peppers’ mission: bringing people together. “The best part of the pepper project,” she says, “is that it brings people from all over the garden together and connects us with other gardens across the country… it’s really cool!” In one sentence, Bev sums up what we at Small Axe Peppers have been trying to express for nearly a decade.
Rush City Community Garden connects neighbors from all walks of life, building a thriving community bound by shared goals and the simple joy of tending to a garden. This garden isn’t just a place for growing food; it’s a meeting point where friendships form, knowledge is shared, and neighbors become a nationwide community. Together, they produce fresh ingredients for our hot sauces, each bottle embodying the dedication and hard work of community members like Bev.
